Think you missed the boat? Think again!

It's April. Do you know where your preschool is?

More accurately, do you know where your child is going to preschool? Perhaps you've been made to feel that if you can't answer that question, you're out of luck. This is Northern Virginia, after all -- home of the overscheduled child and pre-birth wait list, correct?

The truth is, many preschools start having openings at around this time. Between relocations, changing needs in childcare, and plans simply changing, a preschool population can be an ever-evolving thing. There is also a direct correlation between the increasing number of openings and a dwindling wait list -- due to the same reasons!

If you are interested in Dulin Cooperative Preschool but feel it's too late to hope for a spot, think again. We welcome your application at any time, and are happy to give you updates on where you stand on the list over the next few months. Don't believe us? Just ask our very own Membership chair, Ellen Brophy. Ellen herself was on the wait list for the 3s class until the August before school started.

Ready to apply? Email dulinpreschool@gmail.com.

Dulin Web site update

Hello again and happy spring from Dulin Preschool!

Lately we've been having to try publicity 1980s style, without our Web site. Our Web host and designer ran into technical difficulties, so we're starting from the ground up. At an all-volunteer organization, finding the time and expertise to do this isn't always easy! Luckily, we found a wonderful local Web designer and hired her to completely revamp the look of dulinpreschool.org. In the meantime, we're working on pulling information from all our various sources.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about Dulin Preschool, please contact our Membership chair, Ellen Brophy, at dulinpreschool AT gmail DOT com. We are also working to keep our Facebook and Twitter pages more up-to-date.

Open House is tomorrow, February 4!

First off, I'd like to know exactly who decided that preschool admissions open season should be in January. It's bad enough if you're interested at one of those schools that forces you to camp out in the parking lot for days. At Dulin Preschool, our impartial, democratic, and 100% indoors process isn't affected by weather, but we have no control over ice storms that shut down every school, public and private in the DC area.

So Open House is now TOMORROW, Feb. 4, starting at 10 a.m. We look forward to seeing you then, and showing you just how special a school Dulin is. Questions before that time? Email Ellen Brophy at dulinpreschool@gmail.com. Oh, and be the first to mention the Dulin Preschool blog to Ellen at Open House and win a free child-sized Dulin t-shirt!

Dulin Preschool FAQs

Will you have an Open House?
Yes, January 28, 2009, at 10 a.m. Leave your e-mail for an invitation, which will arrive in early January.

What are your hours?
• 9:30-12 for AM2s, 3s, 3/4s, and 4s
• 12:30-3 p.m. for PM2s
Please note that on days when you are the helping parent, you arrive ½ hour before class to help set up, and leave ½ hour after class ends, after cleaning up. Your child stays with you.

What are your class sizes?
• 2s: 8
• 3s: 12
• 3/4s: 13
• 4s: 15
Please note that all of these are well below the maximum allowed by state licensing. We prefer to keep our classes small in order to provide more individualized attention and keep our community small and intimate.

What is the maximum child-adult ratio of each class at Dulin?
• 2s: 4:1
• 3s: 6:1
• 3/4s: 7:1
• 4s: 8:1
State licensing’s ratios are considerably higher. Through our 40+ years of operation, we have found that these smaller class sizes are the most beneficial for our families and our staff.

What are the age cut-offs?
Children must reach the appropriate age (i.e., 2s must turn 2) by September 30 of the calendar year in which the child is enrolled. There are no exceptions to these age cut-offs, even if your child “misses by one day!” or “can keep up with the older group.”

How much is tuition?
• 2s: $99/month
• 3s: 146/month
• 3/4s & 4s: $188/month
Our rates are very low due to parental involvement (yet our teacher salaries are among the highest in the area). Please note that the board presents and membership votes on tuition increases in May, so there may be a slight increase for next year.

Do parents teach the classes?
No, our certified, professional teachers teach. Parents only assist the teacher. Our teachers undergo required training throughout the year and are paid a professional salary.

Do you require background checks for teachers and co-oping adults?
Yes, two state background checks (Virginia State Police and Child Protective Services/Department of Social Services), plus personal references, TB test, and four hours of required training annually. Dulin Preschool will pay for background checks for up to two adults per family; if you choose to have more than two adults certified to work in the classroom, you will have to cover the background costs for those extra individuals yourself. TB test costs are the responsibility of the helping adults as well.

Does Dulin Preschool include religious instruction?
No, as a parent-run co-op, our curriculum is entirely secular, except for saying a simple nondenominational grace before snacktime. Classes may explore holiday traditions of any faith – for example, during December, children learn about the secular aspects of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.

Is there a full-day or extended-care option?
No.

Can my child be enrolled in more than one class?
No.

How do you accommodate gifted children?
At Dulin, all children are gifted!

In all seriousness, children of all abilities thrive in our play-based curriculum.

If your curriculum is play-based, does that mean there are no academics?
Absolutely not. Age-appropriate academics are included in every class, but the focus is on learning through experience and play, not through a lot of seat work. Children learn at their own pace, and the focus is on play and socialization.

Can a working parent or family participate?
Yes, we have many families who make room in their schedules for participating in a co-op despite busy schedules – whether they work outside the home or not. As a rule, working parents should have a certain amount of flexibility in their schedules so they can meet the co-op and committee responsibilities. However, Dulin Preschool can’t take the place of daycare; we have no extended-day option for those needing full-time care.

Can siblings be brought into the classroom on co-op days?
No, state licensing does not permit siblings of any age to be in the classroom. You are responsible for finding childcare for siblings on the days you work in the classroom.

Are you a member of NAEYC?
National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation is a very common question on preschool-search checklists.

Dulin Preschool meets the criteria of NAEYC accreditation (the criteria is almost identical to Virginia state licensing, and we undergo licensing checks twice a year). However, the actual NAEYC accreditation process is very expensive (running into the thousands of dollars) and time-consuming, and as a non-profit preschool with low tuition – not to mention a volunteer board of directors without the time or resources to work full-time on the accreditation process -- we prefer to put our money into school operations instead of a professional designation. We will gladly address specific points of NAEYC standards (available on the NAEYC Web site) and how Dulin Preschool meets or exceeds them.

What is a cooperative preschool?

"Hey, shouldn't all preschools teach children how to cooperate?"

Well, yes, but that isn't exactly what a cooperative preschool is about. Here's a quick look at what a cooperative is, and how we at Dulin define "cooperative" (in addition to teaching our kids to share and take turns, of course!).

Dulin Cooperative Preschool is operated by the membership -- the parents. Parents handle almost all daily operations of the preschool, including hiring, maintenance, membership, purchasing, accounting, publicity, and scheduling. Such ownership in our children's school results in thoughtful decisions and quick action if problems arise or changes need to be made.

At Dulin Preschool, parents also play an integral role in our classrooms. Each class has a professional, experienced, licensed teacher at the helm. However, instead of a teaching assistant, Dulin parents take turns acting as the assistant on a rotating basis. This gives parents hands-on experience in their chidren's first schoolrooms, an opportunity to observe your child's growth and development in the classroom first hand, and regular, face-to-face interaction with your child's friends, their parents/caregivers, and the teacher.

Don't worry -- as a Dulin co-oping parent, you aren't teaching the class! We leave that to the professionals. Usually, the teacher will have a list of tasks she expects you to assist with during the class, such as craft time and small-group work. Teachers also handle any disciplinary issues. As helping parent, you'll also arrive a half-hour early to help set up, stay 1/2 late to clean up, and provide and serve a healthy snack.

Your experiences in the classroom varies from day to day. Sometimes you'll be working on music day, where you'll get to listen to little voices in song. Cooking projects are always fun, and if you're helping parent that day, you may be tasked with helping the children measure, sift, stir, and roll. Wear comfortable shoes, because during outside play you may be asked to participate in a game of "chase!"

Our Participation chair takes care of scheduling your days in the classroom and distributes the calendars a month in advance. You can expect to be the helping parent roughly once or twice a month; this may vary if other families have extenuating circumstances, such as a new baby or extended vacation. In cases such as these, you may have to work an extra day or two, but then have a month in which you work once or not at all. Each family's participation is carefully logged, and by the end of the year, all families have worked equitably.

There are a number of cooperative preschools in the area. Almost all operate as we do, with a parent-run Board of Directors. Most co-ops include parental involvement in the classroom. However, some co-ops offer a "buy-out" option, or keep parental involvement loose or voluntary. At Dulin, we consider co-oping in the classroom to be an integral part of our educational mission and philosophy, so it's required of every single family. It's what sets us apart from other preschools, even other cooperatives. It's also what attracts outstanding, involved families to our school!

Dulin Preschool's potty-training policy

One of the most common questions we get at Dulin Preschool is about our potty-training policy.

Children in our 2s classes are NOT required to be potty-trained.

Children in our 3s, 3/4s, and 4s classes should be potty-trained -- or at least be actively working on it! We recognize that potty proficiency is a developmental skills that varies widely among children, and accidents can (and do) happen, and much as parents would like for toilet training to happen on our schedule, it can only happen on the child's timetable.

As you explore your preschool options, ask about each school's potty-training policy. Be wary of a school that requires very young children (especially 2s) to be trained, because such a regulation isn't respectful of a child's individual growth rate. We also urge you to question a school that requires parents to go to the school to change or clean up a child who has had an accident. Shaming a child doesn't help the potty-training process!

P.S. Even kindergarteners keep a set of spare clothing in their cubbies!

About our classes*

Dulin Cooperative Preschool offers part-time classes for 2-, 3-, and 4-year-old children. Children must reach the appropriate age by September 30 of the school year. For example, a child eligible for our 2-year-old classes for 2009-10 must reach his or her second birthday by September 30, 2009.

We do NOT offer drop-in, full-time or after-care, and our class schedules are set (i.e., your child attends class when scheduled, not according to the days you prefer).

Our school year typically begins the week after Falls Church City and Fairfax County public schools begin, and ends just before Memorial Day. Outside of an optional "summer camp" in June for 3- and 4-year-olds, Dulin Cooperative Preschool does not meet during the summer.

2s: We offer two classes for 2-year-olds, the AM2s and PM2s.
  • AM2s meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30 a.m.-noon
  • PM2s meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30-3 p.m.
  • Children do NOT need to be potty-trained for our 2s classes.
  • Tuition for both the AM and PM classes is $99/month

3s: We offer two classes for 3-year-olds, the 3s and Mixed 3/4s
  • The 3s class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:30-noon. This class is typically for children who have spring and summer birthdays. Tuition: $146/month
  • The 3/4s class is a mixed class of younger 4-year-olds and older 3-year-olds (with birthdays soon after the cut-off date of September 30, usually between October and February). The class meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 9:30-noon. Tuition: $188/month

4s: We offer two classes for 4-year-olds, the 4s and the Mixed 3/4s.
  • The 4s class meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 9:30-noon. This class is typically for children on the older side of 4, with birthdays between October and February. Tuition: $188/month
  • The 3/4s class is a mixed class of younger 4-year-olds (usually with spring or summer birthdays) and older 3-year-olds. 4-year-olds in the mixed class typically go straight to kindergarten from the 3/4s, but for families desiring a "bonus" year of preschool, 3/4 children may attend the 4s class the following year as a 5-year-old. Tuition: $188/month.

We offer two extended-day options:

  • Lunch Bunch (Mondays, noon-1:30 p.m.) is an opportunity for our 3s and 4s from different classes to come together, socialize, and enjoy an extra 1 1/2 hours of play along with a lunch brought from home. Sign-up is typically two weeks in advance, on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost for each Lunch Bunch session is $7.
  • Enrichment (Thursdays, noon-2:30 p.m.) is an optional pre-kindergarten session for four-year-olds in our 3/4s and 4s classes. Enrichment allows pre-kindergarteners to explore skills and activities that will prepare them for the following year.

*Please note that class times, days, and fees are subject to change from year to year. Should schedules and tuition change before your child begins at Dulin, we will give you plenty of notice.

Welcome to Dulin Preschool's blog!

Here at Dulin, we get a lot of questions about what kind of school we are, how we operate, and how to become a member. This blog will be a resource for prospective families looking for information about our exceptional school. We welcome questions from readers and look forward to sharing what makes us wonderfully different from so many preschools in our area.

As a parent-run cooperative preschool, membership provides families an opportunity to lend their skills to the operations of their children's school. We attract talent from just about every industry -- our current Board of Directors includes lawyers, communications specialists, accountants, scientists, educators, and a geologist, just to name a few! Whether we extend our existing skills to our Dulin roles or take on something completely different, there's a story behind every position. This blog will also introduce you to these dedicated volunteers.

At the moment, our Web site is undergoing maintenance, so please check back here for updates about our application process and Open House.
